EU countries demand sanctions against Hungary for violating LGBTQI+ rights

Viktor Orbán accused of violating minority rights

EU member states have issued a strong appeal to the European Commission— they are demanding that Hungary be sanctioned for a new law that effectively bans LGBTQI+ Pride events. According to European countries, Budapest is violating the EU’s core values — primarily human rights, equality, and freedom of expression.

Earlier, the unicameral Hungarian parliament passed a law by majority vote prohibiting mass events that “violate the child protection law.” The legislation on “child protection” prohibits the "promotion" of homosexuality and gender transition. In effect, this means a ban on the annual Budapest Pride. In addition, MPs approved constitutional amendments targeting LGBTQI+s.

“We are deeply concerned by these actions, which contradict the fundamental values — human dignity, freedom, equality, and respect for human rights (…) We call on the Commission to promptly apply all legal tools at its disposal if these measures are not appropriately reviewed [by Hungary],” the statement reads.

The statement to the European Commission was signed by Germany, France, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, and Luxembourg.
