ILGA-Europe's statement on the anti-LGBTI+ draft law
“They must not be adopted”
ILGA-Europe has released a statement regarding the anti-LGBTI+ bill submitted to the Turkish Parliament by conservative party HÜDA-PAR in April, as well as the draft version of another anti-LGBTI+ law that surfaced in March but was not included in the 10th Judicial Reform Package.
In its statement, the organization emphasized that both the proposed bill and the earlier draft are part of the government’s broader crackdown on civil rights and democracy, saying:
“In recent months, those detained have included artists, human rights defenders, lawyers, politicians, and journalists — as well as LGBTI+ rights advocates.”
According to ILGA-Europe’s Advocacy Director, Katrin Hugendubel: “These discriminatory amendments must be considered as part of the broader attack on fundamental rights and sharp decline of democracy in Turkey. They introduce further discrimination against the LGBTI community, contravening international fundamental rights standards and decisions of Turkey’s Constitutional Court and contribute to the tightening of the fundamental right to freedom of expression. They must not be adopted.”
