The “March of Equality” in Kyiv

A march in support of LGBTQI+ rights was held in Ukraine’s capital.

In Kyiv, a “March of Equality” took place featuring artists, activists, military personnel, ambassadors, and youth. Over 1,500 people participated in the event.

Marchers urged Ukrainian authorities to focus on protecting LGBTQI+s from violence and to expedite the adoption of a law on civil partnerships. Last year, the President of Ukraine promised to sign a law allowing same-sex couples to register their relationships—provided that the Verkhovna Rada passes the bill.

Immediately after the march ended, homophobes held their own rally under the slogans “For the protection of family, children, and Ukraine” and “All together, all for the family.” Nevertheless, there were no clashes—queer activists successfully held their pride and raised over 20,000 hryvnias in support of Ukrainian servicemembers.
