Russia liquidates the only party with a trans politician
The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, at the request of the Ministry of Justice, has liquidated the “Civic Initiative” party. This party had nominated Ksenia Sobchak and Boris Nadezhdin in the past, and its Altai branch was led by a transgender woman, Yulia Alyoshina.
According to court records, the Ministry of Justice made the request back in May. The outcome of the hearing was reported by RBC. According to journalists, “Civic Initiative” plans to challenge this decision in court.
The Ministry justified its request by citing the party’s poor electoral performance. Over the past seven years, “Civic Initiative” managed to nominate a candidate to a regional legislative body only once — in Primorsky Krai. In municipal elections, party candidates ran only in 19 out of 89 regions. The law requires political parties to nominate candidates for state positions in at least 20% of the country’s regions, and for municipal positions in more than 50%.
