Khazar University Dean: “Same-sex marriage is a rebellion against nature”

The dean of Khazar University’s Faculty of Economics and Business targeted same-sex marriage in a statement shared on his social media. He noted:

“At first glance, the current statistics on same-sex marriages do not seem particularly alarming. But the problem is that the 39 countries with a population of 1.5 billion where same-sex marriage is legal are mostly progressive countries that we would like to emulate…

Same-sex marriage is a rebellion against nature!”

This is the latest example of what has been recorded as an openly homophobic stance against LGBTQ+ rights by individuals in leadership positions in academia in Azerbaijan.

LGBTQ+ rights advocate Alex Shah condemned the remarks as blatant homophobia, saying the opinion of the dean “violates the principles of academic integrity and equality that universities are meant to uphold. Institutions of higher education must foster respect, diversity, and human dignity, not spread fear and exclusion.”.
