Albania adopts inclusive Law “On Gender Equality”

The Albanian government has removed from its draft Gender Equality Law a clause that defined gender as “only biologically unchangeable male and female,” which had been proposed as part of aligning national legislation with EU standards.

LGBTQI+ activists warned that such a definition would effectively make legal gender recognition impossible and lead to an increase in non-consensual medical interventions on intersex people.

Following the removal of this provision, the parliament adopted a new law “On Gender Equality” on 30 October, aligning the definition of gender with the Istanbul Convention and prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
