Instagram hearts become divorce evidence in Turkey
In a precedent-setting decision, Turkey’s top court in Kayseri has ruled that repeatedly liking other women’s photos on social media may amount to marital infidelity — and can be cited as evidence in divorce cases.
The ruling was issued by the Turkish Court of Cassation, which found that persistent engagement with other women’s online content can constitute behaviour that “undermines marital trust.”
The implication is unmistakable: digital behaviour is no longer seen as neutral. Likes are public, traceable, and increasingly interpreted as intention — particularly when they cross the boundaries a couple has set for their relationship.
The court didn't consider every Instagram "like" to be cheating. Instead, it recognized a reality that many couples already know - that attention is a value, and when attention is constantly diverted, trust can be silently eroded by a touch, an algorithm, a screenshot.
