Minority Azerbaijan became one of the first members of the European-wide Bi+ organization
The Azerbaijani queer rights organization Minority Azerbaijan was officially registered as one of the first organizational members of the European-wide bi+ umbrella organization Bi+ Equal in February 2026.
In February 2026, Minority Azerbaijan joined the ranks of the first organizational members of Bi+ Equal, the first pan-European bi+ umbrella organization in history. Bi+ Equal was officially registered with the Chamber of Commerce of the Netherlands on February 9, 2026. The organization is the result of a two-year project launched in April 2024 by Bi+ Nederland and Spectrum France. At the Founding General Meeting held in Vilnius in October 2025, fifty bi+ activists from across the pan-European region came together and approved the organization’s statutes, discussing them article by article.
The creation of Bi+ Equal recognised the specific situation of bisexual and bi+ people within the LGBTQI+ movement. The organisation said that Europe-wide umbrella organisations for trans, intersex and lesbian people have existed for years, but until now there has been no such organisation dedicated to the issues faced by bi+ people.
Bi+ Equal is based on the principle of mapping bi+ activists and organisations, exploring their needs and creating a community-led organisation. The membership structure recognises the right of members to co-shape the future of the organisation. The membership of organisations from non-EU countries, such as Minority Azerbaijan, broadens the geographical scope of the bi+ movement.
This membership opens up a new platform for Minority Azerbaijan to represent the bi+ experience in Azerbaijan at an international level. Given that bi+ identity is almost completely invisible in public discourse and in the legal framework in Azerbaijan, this is a concrete step that will strengthen bi+ visibility, at least internationally.
