Russia declared NC SOS Crisis Group ‘extremist’

Russian authorities have declared another LGBTQI+ organization ‘extremist’. NC SOS Crisis Group, which rescues queer people in the North Caucasus, learned of its status about a month after the court ruling.

“We learned about this from a letter addressed to NC SOS Director David Isteev about a month after the decision was made. We have not yet been added to the official register. We intend to appeal and challenge this status, although we understand that the court, which imagines the existence of non-existent movements, will not rule in our favor,” the group said on social media.

NC SOS Crisis Group said it would continue its work and that nothing had changed for people who turned to it for help. “We are ready to provide consultations, assist with evacuations, and offer medical and psychological support. Currently, receiving assistance is not considered participation in the organization’s activities, so contacting us does not in itself entail legal consequences,” the group said.

The group said the additional security measures they had implemented had made their work more difficult and expensive, and urged people to support them.

In 2024, the Russian Supreme Court declared the "international LGBT movement" extremist in Russia.
