One-year delay in trans rights in El Salvador
The El Salvador legislative body did not pass a law that would allow trans people to change their names on their identity documents, which must be passed in a year.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) and COMCAVIS TRANS, which works for LGBTI+ rights in El Salvador, condemned the El Salvador Legislative Assembly for failing to pass legislation that would allow trans people to change their names on identity documents, in a statement on February 23.
In February 2022, the Supreme Court gave the Legislative Assembly one year to introduce a legal gender recognition procedure that would prevent discrimination against trans people. However, the Legislative Assembly did not pass this resolution in the intervening one-year period.
In a statement, HRW and COMMACIS TRANS called on the El Salvador Legislative Assembly to pass legislation allowing trans people to change their names and gender markers in their legal documents.
