Thailand makes hormone replacement therapy free for trans people
Thailand, where marriage equality law recently came into effect, has added hormone replacement therapy to the free healthcare services offered by the National Health Office.
Just days after marriage equality became law in Thailand, the Thai Ministry of Health has added hormone replacement therapy to the free healthcare services offered to Thai citizens.
According to Kaos GL, on Monday, Thailand's Ministry of Public Health allocated 145.63 million Thai baht to the National Health Security Office for hormone replacement therapy. The ministry said the money would cover the health care of 200,000 transgender people.
Thailand’s marriage equality law came into effect on January 22 and it became the first country in Southeast Asia to grant same-sex couples the right to marry. The marriage equality law was passed in Thailand on June 15, 2024.
The law amended the country’s Civil Code and ensured that same-sex married couples have legal, medical and financial rights, as well as the right to inherit and adopt. The new law also requires gender-neutral language to be used instead of binary language in official documents.
