Homophobic attack at Baku beach

A violent homophobic assault occurred at a beach in Baku in early May, when a group of over seven young men attacked two individuals, reportedly due to their feminine behavior. This was reported by Qiy Vaar!

The footage, shared on TikTok by a user with the handle “O. Verdiyev,” shows the two victims walking along the beach before being surrounded and harassed by the group. The attackers can be seen filming themselves from a distance, seemingly proud of their actions. In subsequent social media posts, these perpetrators were openly praised by users endorsing the violence.

The video quickly garnered thousands of likes and a flood of homophobic comments, with many users expressing support for the assault. Alarmingly, among these reactions were direct calls for further violence, including threats of murder. Though the original video has since been deleted, its impact and message of hate linger.

Qıy Vaar!, a local LGBTQ+ platform, issued a statement expressing grave concern:

“We are disturbed by these scenes. We call on relevant authorities to take immediate action. To the victims: if you see this call, please contact us. We are here to provide legal support and solidarity.”
