European Parliament votes to ban conversion ‘therapies’

405 MEPs voted in favour of an EU-wide ban on conversion ‘therapies’ in Europe.

The European Commission has until 18 May 2026 to respond officially to the 1.2 million EU citizens who signed the European Citizens’ Initiative calling for a ban on these torturous practices.

The European Parliament has condemned conversion practices, which are practices aimed at changing, suppressing or suppressing a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression, as a violation of fundamental rights and called on the European Commission to take concrete measures to combat them.

At the same time, Parliament called on the Commission to submit a proposal for a legal act establishing a European Union ban on conversion practices in all Member States, as a follow-up to the European Citizens' Initiative "Ban on conversion practices in the European Union".
