Serbia is the first Balkan country to have an openly gay president.

Ana Brnabić has assumed the role of acting President of Serbia.

Following Aleksandar Vučić's resignation, Ana Brnabić, previously the Speaker of the Serbian Parliament, began serving as the acting President of Serbia on September 28.

In 2017, she was appointed as Serbia's first female Prime Minister and the first lesbian Prime Minister to openly declare her sexual orientation.

Elections are scheduled to be held in the country in the coming months, meaning Brnabić is unlikely to remain in this position for long.

Brnabić is a member of the Serbian Progressive Party. Although she speaks openly about her sexual orientation, she has previously stated that she did not wish to be defined as Serbia's "gay prime minister." She expressed a reluctance to prioritize LGBTQI+ legal reforms while focusing on other political priorities.

The politician has also faced criticism from LGBTQI+ activists. Serbian activists argue that, despite being in a same-sex relationship and raising a child with her partner, Brnabić has failed to champion LGBTQI+ equality in Serbia. However, in September 2017, she became the first Serbian prime minister to participate in a Pride event by taking part in the Belgrade Pride march.
