Puerto Rico approves "X" gender marker
Activists call it a historic decision
Non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals in Puerto Rico will now be able to indicate the gender marker “X” on their birth certificates. The Supreme Court made this decision after approving a lawsuit filed by six non-binary people against the governor and the health minister, demanding recognition of their gender identity in official documents.
Pedro Julio Serrano, president of La Federación LGBTQ+ de Puerto Rico, called the decision historic and emphasized that it is an important step toward equality. At the same time, Governor Jenniffer González Colón told reporters that she awaits recommendations from the Department of Justice following the court ruling.
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory with limited autonomy, and local authorities must comply with federal court rulings. As early as 2017, a U.S. federal court ruled that transgender individuals in Puerto Rico have the right to change the gender marker on their birth certificates. Now, a similar step forward has been made for non-binary people.
